Yahoo Poll: Is there good justification for hiring Chinese workers for Philippine infrastructure projects?

The lack of skilled workers was blamed for the surge of Chinese laborers in the Philippines.

President Rodrigo Duterte’s spokesperson Salvador Panelo said Filipinos “lack the skill”, particularly in construction works.

“We lack so many construction workers here. Perhaps, that’s why there are many Chinese nationals being hired because no Filipinos can do construction works. There are many Filipinos who are unemployed, and yet, they lack the skill so we need to teach them,” Panelo said.

A party-list representative, however, slammed the supposed preference for more Chinese workers to work in China-funded projects under the government’s infrastructure program as “highly insulting” to Filipinos.

“The Palace claim that Filipino working class lacks skills that is why it prefers Chinese migrant workers for Duterte’s ‘Build Build Build’ projects is highly insulting to Filipino workers”, Anakpawis Representative Ariel Casilao said.
