The president's spokesperson said the Filipino leader is his "modern-day Lapu-Lapu".
Presidential Spokesperson Harry Roque made this remark as the Philippines mark the 500th anniversary of the Filipino chieftain's victory at the "Battle of Mactan" against foreign conquerors.
(Translation: President Rodrigo Roa Duterte is my modern-day Lapu-Lapu, especially in his independent foreign policy. That means we are all friends, we have no enemies, we do not fear any foreigner.)
Despite Lapu-Lapu's victory that delayed Spain's colonization by 44 years, the Philippines fell under Spanish rule for more than 300 years.
