President Rodrigo Duterte is set to appoint his sixth Philippine National Police (PNP) chief as current top cop Debold Sinas retires on May 8.

Interior Secretary Eduardo Año will submit a shortlist of names for the president to choose from to succeed Sinas.

Those said to be in contention for the top cop position are deputy chief for administration Guillermo Eleazar, Metro Manila police chief Vicente Danao, deputy chief for operations Joselito Vera Cruz, and chief directorial staff Israel Ephraim Dickson.

If chosen, Eleazar has only six months to serve as is he due for retirement on November 13.

Danao was Davao's police chief when Duterte was mayor. His retirement is not due until August 2023.

Vera Cruz is third in command in the PNP hierarchy. His retirement is in March 2022.

Dickson is fourth in the PNP hierarchy. His will also retire in March 2022.
