(UPDATED) Cebuano coaching legend Raul "Yayoy" Alcoseba is all set to return home to the school he once played and coached for as he is on the verge of being named the new head coach of the University of San Jose-Recoletos (USJ-R) Jaguars.
According to numerous sources, Alcoseba is deep in discussions with USJ-R management to assume the leadership reins for a Jaguars squad that has yet to win a Cesafi title since it joined the league 20 years ago. Last season was a particular low point for USJ-R as it finished dead last in the standings after it came within a win away from winning the 2018 championship.
On Friday morning, Alcoseba met with Reverend Father Roy Baluarte, OAR, the school’s Vice President for Student Welfare and Sports Moderator, as well as lawyer Jesus D. Velez, the Director for Student Affairs Office and Interim Assistant Sports Moderator to discuss the matter.
The school is expected to make an official announcement soon.
The development comes not long after Alcoseba and the University of Cebu (UC) parted ways late last year. During Alcoseba’s stint with the Webmasters, UC was able to make the finals once, losing to the University of the Visayas in 2017. UC was able to make the semifinal round in each of the last two years.
Alcoseba is expected to bring his winning tradition and fiery coaching style to a USJ-R squad in need of a spark. With veteran guard Miguel Gastador having already exhausted his playing eligibility, USJ-R is virtually starting from scratch in their build-up towards the new season of the Cesafi.
