Young Gilas Pilipinas show readiness with rout of Thailand

The youthful Gilas Pilipinas showed that the future has arrived as they destroyed Thailand, 93-61, in the second window of the 2021 FIBA Asia Cup qualifiers on Friday night at the Khalifa Sport City in Manama, Bahrain.

The Gilas bucked a strong start by the Thai squad and seized full control of the match with a fiery second period performance that saw incoming Ateneo stud Dwight Ramos show off his skills.

Up by just two, 21-19, after the first 10 minutes of action, Ramos exploded for 11 points in the second as the Gilas unleashed a 27-1 blast that got them a 53-29 halftime lead.

Shifty guard Juan Gomez de Liano sparked the run with three three-pointers that allowed the Gilas to break loose from a 26-all deadlock and finally get their game going until the final buzzer.

Ramos finished with 20 points, seven rebounds, three assists, and three steals in 19 minutes of action while Gomez de Liano added 12 points, four rebounds, three assists, a steal and a block. La Salle center Justine Baltazar had 12 poitnts, six boards and a block.

University of the Visayas product Rey Anthony Suerte chipped in nine points, a rebound and two assists.

The Gilas Pilipinas will wrap up their stint inside the Manama “bubble” with a another match against Thailand on Monday, November 30. Tip-off will still be at 9 p.m. Philippine time. (JNP)
