Yuka Saso’s incredible win at the 76th US Women’s Open Championship in San Francisco propelled her to no. 9 in the Rolex Women’s World Golf Rankings, putting her in prime position to snag a spot in the upcoming Tokyo Olympics.
Previously ranked at no. 40, the 19-year old’s historic win on Monday prompted her astronomic rise in the standings and will most likely give her a spot on the Philippines’ contingent to the Tokyo Olympics. Team Philippines will be bannered by weightlifting Olympic silver medalist Hidilyn Diaz, boxer Eumir Marcial and Cebuana skateboarding star Margielyn Didal, just to name a few.
Saso will not be resting on her laurels as she says she’ll keep on competing in the next few weeks to bolster her rankings.
“The Olympics is in August but there are still many tournaments before it. When it’s the Olympics, it’s game time but it’s game time every week but I don’t want to rush. I just want to take it week by week, play golf, and enjoy all the tournaments I can join,” Saso was quoted as saying in a report on Tiebreaker Times.
Saso, who is half Japanese, says she is proud of her heritage and will represent both the Philippines and Japan proudly.
“I actually think I’m sticking with the Philippines and that won’t change. Whatever happens in the future, I’m still Filipino and I’m still Japanese. I don’t want to choose because I’m both,” she said. (JNP)
