THE Zamboanga siblings came out victorious with impressive submission wins on Aug. 28, 2020 in the ONE Championship: “A New Breed” in Bangkok, Thailand.
Unbeaten Denice Zamboanga solidified her status as the top contender in the atomweight division following a first round Americana submission win over Thai judo champion Watsapinya Kaewkhong in one of the featured fights in the closed-doors event.
Denice dominated Kaewkhong, a veteran Muay Thai fighter, in the stand up department. She then took her down, worked to a side control and locked in an Americana.
The 23-year-old Denice remained unbeaten with 8-0, while Kaewkhong lost her MMA debut and dropped to 0-1.
Denice is closing in on a world title shot against ONE Championship atomweight champion Angela Lee.
Denice’s older brother, Drex Zamboanga, on the other hand, had a successful ONE Championship debut with a second round rear-naked choke win over Thai Detchadin Sornsirisuphathin.
Both exchanged strikes in most of first round. In the second round, Drex took Sornsirisuphathin down. He somehow got the Thai’s back and sank in a deep rear-naked-choke that put Sornsirisuphathin to sleep.
Drex, the URCC bantamweight champion, improved to 9-5, while Sornsirisuphathin dropped to 8-6.
Fil-Am KC Carlos, in the meantime, lost to Wondergirl Fairtex via a second round stoppage in a Muay Thai fight.
Fairtex dominated the fight and cut Carlos’ nose with an elbow. Carlos’ corner threw in the towel later in the second round.
Carlos fell to 17-13-1, while Fairtex improved to 35-16-2. (EKA)
